Florida Trip 2014 (#1)

We officially had our first big trip as a family of 5!  We joined my parents and brother for a Florida vacation in Ft. Meyers Beach, and a memorable trip it was.  I am going to write some specific memories first and then post pictures of the trip.

1. First time flying with kids:  5 people flying, 4 back packs a-carrying, 3 car seats we're lugging, 2 suitcases packing, and one stroller and air mattress in a pear tree. :)  While it was quite the event, the kids did great!  I think they got caught up in the excitement of it all, so they thought it was really cool to fly on a plane.  Even Asher did pretty good, with very little complaining.  All-in-all we count this a big success. :)

2. Asher got sick: The day before we left for Florida, I took Asher to the doctor because he developed a cough that didn't sound right to me.  He was diagnosed with bronchiolitis.  The doctor cleared us to travel, but told me to keep an eye on him and if symptoms got worse, we might need to take him to the E.R. in Ft. Meyers.  The first couple of days in FL, Asher seemed to stay the same, but by the third evening/night, I knew he was getting worse.  He was having a consistent fever (especially at night), and he was up every hour or two at night crying and miserable.  Eric took him to the urgent care the following morning (I was too tired to go), and, after examination and x-rays, he was diagnosed with pneumonia.  The doctor confirmed the diagnosis of bronchiolitis and added secondary pneumonia.  Our poor baby.  We got him on antibiotics right away, and he started getting better, even as soon as the following day.

3. Pontoon ride and dolphins: We didn't have a lot planned for our trip.  The goal was to relax and do a couple things here and there during our stay.  We stayed in a condo right on the beach, so many of our days were spent playing on the beach or just relaxing.  But, one of the things we did do was rent a pontoon boat for a couple hours.  This was one of my favorite things we did!  It was a nice relaxing ride on the water, but the best thing is that we saw lots of dolphins!  We were told we might see some, but I was skeptical.  Lo and behold, we hadn't been out that long when we started seeing dolphins coming up out of the water all around us.  I was only able to get a couple pictures as they are kind of hard to catch (especially while holding a baby).  At any rate, it was cool to see!  Oh, and we also saw dolphins while we were just standing on the beach one day...really neat.

4. Funny Story: Besides Asher getting sick, I would say that our vacation was pretty free of hiccups or things gone wrong. But, there is one funny story. :)  The day we were going home, we had some time to kill between our check out time and our flight, so we visited a local beach and let the kids play in the sand and run off some energy. They ended up getting pretty wet from wading in the water and splashing, so we knew they would need a change of clothes once we got back to the car.  Eric had bought some new (TSA approved) combination locks in FL for our luggage, which he had programmed and attached to our baggage.  When we arrived back at our car, Eric went to open the kids suitcase to get a fresh change of clothes for them, and realized that he had not programmed the lock like he thought he had, and had no idea what the combination was.  The kids were soaking wet and we had no way of opening their suitcase-ha! So, we opened our suitcase and temporarily dressed them in a couple of our t-shirts so that they wouldn't be naked in their carseats.  Then, we headed to a local outlet mall, and I got them some clothes to travel in.  Eric then called the airport and asked if they could unlock our suitcase (as the lock was TSA approved), and they confirmed that this would not be a problem....crisis averted!  Ah, what's a vacation without at least one funny story...

Now for pictures...
